April's Meet Our Member: Jennifer Gilpin
Jennifer Gilpin has been attending St. David’s since 1998. Parishioner Daphne Gilpin, Jennifer’s sister-in-law, was the one who suggested that she begin to worship at St. David’s.
“I was born and raised in the Anglican Church,” Jennifer said. “I was accustomed to the structure of an Episcopal service. So when I first attended St. David’s, I was very comfortable here. Everything just fell into place.”
Jennifer has served twice on the vestry. She has served on the newcomer’s and finance committees and also a discernment committee. She has been an usher and a greeter. A few years ago, she was the leader of the “Knowing God” reading group and used the book: “Celebration of Discipline, The Path to Spiritual Growth,” as the curriculum. Jennifer is currently in the Bible study group and is one of our parishioners reading it on a daily basis.
Jennifer was born and raised in Jamaica. She attended Mico University College in Kingston and graduated with her teaching certificate. She was married into the Catholic faith. After marriage, she moved to the Bahamas and lived in Freeport for three and a half years before returning to Jamaica. While in the Caribbean, she taught in elementary schools on both islands.
Five years later, Jennifer moved to Toronto, Ontario and went to work for an insurance company. By this time, Daphne had moved to Southfield, so Jennifer would regularly come to Michigan to visit with her. Eventually, Jennifer followed Daphne and moved to Southfield herself.
For the past 13 years, Jennifer has been working in retail sales. She started with Expo Design Center, a subsidiary of Home Depot. After they closed, she was transferred to the Home Depot store on Southfield Road north of 12 Mile where she is an appliance salesperson.
Jennifer has two daughters. Nicole, who is married, lives with her husband and their three children in Bloomfield Township. Her other daughter Nadine lives in Southfield.
In her spare time, Jennifer likes to “be around the grandkids” and also enjoys reading books that help her pray and meditate while keeping on her spiritual journey. She also enjoys following informational resources such as Time magazine. During the summer months, she likes to attend summer festivals in downtown Detroit.
Every four or five years, Jennifer likes to go back to Jamaica (her last visit was in 2009) where she has friends and some family. Her other favorite travel destinations include New York and San Francisco.
She has stayed at St. David’s for all of these years because of the variety of ministries and outreach available in the church and the community. She has liked all of the ministers that have been at the church in the last 15 years.
Jennifer added, “I think St. David’s is just the right size. It makes it easy to get to know everybody.”
